Frisson and disbelief. The only words to accurately describe what it felt like as Pinhead Gunpowder took the stage at First Avenue in Minneapolis on Wednesday night, October 7.

The band, featuring Berkeley, CA, punk rock royalty, had yet to tour east of the Nevadas since their inception in 1991. Each member has contributed to various acts of notorious 924 Gilman Street lore and the DIY culture that set the standard for common practices among local bands and small clubs to this day. Despite early lineup shifts and a brief dispute over the band’s name, the core quartet, as it remains today, consists of Aaron Cometbus, Bill Schneider, Jason White, and Billie Joe Armstrong. The band released their latest full-length album, Unt, in October 2024. Two years later, they embarked on a proper U.S. tour, kicking things off at the legendary First Avenue in Minneapolis.

Black and white image of a rock band performing on stage. The lead singer stands at the microphone while two guitarists play beside him. The bassist is visible in the background, and stage lighting creates a dramatic effect.

The final opening band, Night Shop, wrapped up their set with a cover of The Jim Carroll Band’s “People Who Died,” further ramping up the anticipation of what was to come. During the onstage gear swap, with The Boys’ “Brickfield Nights” and The Replacements’ “Bastards of Young” playing over the house speakers, the tension was palpable. Finally, the house lights dropped, and the band entered from stage left, audience right, to Melanie’s “Brand New Key.” As I’m writing this, I can still feel exactly what I felt the moment I saw the band step onto that stage: full-body chills and utter disbelief.

While leaning heavily into the promotion of their newest record, they included a variety of standout tracks from their entire back catalog, as well as two covers. The band powered through a 27-song setlist with hardly a break between songs. As the night came to a close, it was clear those four guys had brought that same Bay Area club energy of a packed 924 Gilman all the way to the Twin Cities, playing to a sold-out floor at First Avenue.

The tour continues through November, wrapping up with a final show in Garden Grove, CA. Limited tour-variant vinyl pressings of each record, as well as T-shirts and a special commemorative tour poster, are available for purchase at the merch table.
