Hot Flash Heat Wave, the Los Angeles-based indie band, have spent over a decade quietly building one of the most devoted fanbases in the dreampop underground. From their 2015 debut Neapolitan to 2022’s Sportswear, they’ve never made the same record twice.

Hot Flash Heat Wave have been building toward something all year, and now we know what it was. Butterfly in a Landslide arrived on June 5, 2026, and it’s already generating buzz in the indie and shoegaze communities. It’s been flagged as one of the notable new releases in the dreampop and shoegaze world this week.

The response to the album’s live release party was electric. The Hunt Vintage, a mid-century furniture shop on Sunset Boulevard in Echo Park, hosted the band to play the album in its entirety, which turned the small room into one giant mosh pit. The guys invited the audience to get closer and closer until there was hardly a way to tell where the stage started and the crowd ended.

The title alone signals a certain ambition. There’s something inherently contradictory about a butterfly in a landslide, fragility caught inside chaos, and it’s a fitting image for a band that has always made delicate music out of turbulent feelings. The lead-up to the album included a string of 2026 singles: “Moment” in February and “Freefall” in March, both of which pointed toward a more expansive, emotionally open chapter for the band.

Hot Flash Heat Wave have been pushing their sound into new territory since their 2022 album Sportswear, which fused indie rock hooks with new wave, club culture, and R&B influences. Butterfly in a Landslide is their next leap.
